Brenda D. Roberts, CPA, CIA, CFE
Brenda Roberts has been Oakland’s City Auditor since 2015. As one of few elected City Auditors in California, she is truly independent, allowing her to investigate any area of our City government most vulnerable to fraud, waste, and abuse.
Brenda has called Oakland home for over 25 years; it is where she built her life and raised her three daughters. Like you, she desires an efficient and effective City government and her work is specifically designed to strengthen government operations for the benefit of Oakland residents. She shares your concerns about our City’s cost of living, the retention of our longtime Oakland residents, the growing homeless population, community health and safety and the education of Oakland’s youth.
Her approach to addressing these concerns takes two courses. The first is through a robust risk assessment process that identifies and prioritizes Oakland’s challenges. This assessment helps determine how City Auditor Department resources will be directed. Second is through the Whistleblower Hotline. As the elected official responsible for this critical program, Brenda encourages all City employees and residents to use the Hotline so she can help create more accountability and transparency in our City.
Brenda brings two decades of professional auditing and management experience into the City of Oakland. She is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and Certified Fraud Examiner and has performed audits for several agencies including Fortune 500 companies, and has worked for the U.S. Office of Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor, and City/County of San Francisco. She is an award-winning auditor, and most recently received the Knighton Award – Exemplary from the Association of Local Government Auditors.
When she is not busy at work (which is rare!), she’s usually at home cooking meals and relaxing with her daughters, but you will also find her hiking in the hills, walking the Lakes or volunteering for Oakland’s Reading Partners, Rotary KinderPrep, Alameda County Leadership Academy. She also loves beautifying Oakland’s public parks and gardens on Clean-Up and Earth Days and mentoring young women as they kick off their careers.
She is deeply invested in Oakland and its residents, and is honored to serve as your City Auditor.
